Sex Trafficking

“Sex trafficking (commercial sex act) is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which a person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age.  -2000 Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

 

Red Flags

Appearance

  • Poor physical health and signs of physical abuse

  • Clothing inconsistent with weather

  • Suspicious tattoos or traffickers initials, symbols associated with trafficking (crown, $, money bag, ATM, bar code)

  • Does not have personal identification

  • Controlling relationship/older “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”

  • Common victimization environments: Prostitution, Escort Services, Strip Clubs, Pornography Sites, Cyber Sex Sites, Truck Stops, Massage Parlors

Behavior

  • Sudden change in school attendance, social groups, demeanor or sexual behavior

  • Disconnection from family, friends and community

  • Lack of awareness of prior and current travel locations

  • History inconsistent with stories or findings

  • Lack of eye contact, coached responses

  • Frequent travel/unusual hotel activity

*Any person under 18 years old who is engaged in commercial sex acts, regardless of the use of force, fraud, or coercion, is a victim of human trafficking, even if they appear to consent to the commercial sex act. –OVC
