Labor Trafficking

Labor trafficking (for labor or services), through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purposes of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery.” -2000 Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

 

Red Flags:

Appearance

  • Poor living or working conditions

  • Working long hours or being forced to work when sick

  • Working to pay off a debt or bondage

  • Document confiscation

  • Signs of trauma, fatigue, injuries, abuse

  • Common victimization environments: domestic work, hotel/restaurant service, manufacturing, agriculture, health and beauty services, door-to-door sales and construction

Behavior

  • Fear for the safety of individual or their family members

  • Threats of violence

  • Fear of deportation

  • Language or cultural barriers

  • Controlled by third party

  • Lack of knowledge about community or residence
